WHAT WE’RE READING: Many people in the US don’t have access to tap water at home

A heat map of the united states showing households without running water

😬 “Completely bonkers”

🚱 I knew that many people in the US didn’t have access to tap water at home. I didn’t realize many of them lived in cities.

🗽 New York City is the water poverty capital of the United States with 56,900 residents living without access to running water.

🏰 Second place – Los Angeles, with 45,900 people without access to running water

🌉 Third place – San Francisco, with 24,400 people without access to running water.

Lead researcher Katie Meehan said, “This isn’t just an engineering problem. This is a political, financial, economic and social problem.”

The study estimated 1.1 million people in the United States currently live without household running water and sewerage.
