Target Audience: Aid Agencies; Foundations; International Development Organizations
The sudden demise of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is giving us all time to rethink and reframe development. Fortunately, we don’t have to start from scratch. Many people have been offering alternatives for years.
This 2024 video podcast, from The Development Hub’s podcast “The Power Shift: Decolonizing Development,” is a bit nerdy. Here are my takeaways:
- It’s important to consider HOW development is done. Dignity and accountability matter more than ticking monitoring boxes.
- Development is an ongoing process. Few, if any countries are fully developed. We can all learn from each other.
- More aid does not equal less poverty.
Global Public Investment is a new topic to me. The term “comprises three universal principles, reflecting a more horizontal approach to addressing the world’s challenges. No more top-down decision-making; no more patronizing donor-recipient narratives. It’s time for all countries to work together.” The concept makes the case that international public finance has a critical role to play in tackling the climate emergency, preparing for the next pandemic, and financing the Sustainable Development Goals.
